Works are in full swing for the construction of a large marketplace in the city of Pleebo, located in the Pleebo-Sodoke District in Maryland County. The marketplace will cost US$430,424.88 and is expected to be a regional business hub for businesspeople from neighboring River Gee and Grand Kru Counties, as well as for those from La Côte d’Ivoire.
Funding for this massive project was provided by the World Bank through the Smallholders Agriculture Productivity Enhancement and Commercialization (SAPEC) of the Ministry of Agriculture.
Pleebo is the commercial city of Maryland County where 22,693 were counted during the last population census in 2008. Today, about 60,000 persons are estimated to be living in Pleebo, where the Maryland Oil Palm Project (MOPP), Cavalla Rubber Corporation (CRC), the Chinese Railway Company, SAPEC, and the company constructing the MOPP palm oil factory are all headquartered and have their workforce.
Goods procured from neighboring La Côte d’Ivoire, along with local produce are marketed in Pleebo and next-door Karloken. The county headquarters of Harper, with a population of 17,837, depends on Pleebo for commerce.
Beneficiaries of the market project will predominantly be women, who constitute about 60% of the business people in the region. Women trade largely in food stuff produced locally and clothing imported from La Côte d’Ivoire. Praises are being heaped on government by the people of Maryland County for the project.
